Our Backyard

We brought our property 6 years ago. The first time we visited our potential home site it was a mass of bush and trees with a somewhat small clearing. We had to scramble over a ditch and walk through prickly bushes to get to it. Talk about inspiration! We had to envision the finished product, what our home and garden would look like.

Our house was finally built and a small area of land was cleared. In our first summer it was all ready clear that we would need to push the bush back, those mosquitos were so big and bothersome!

Maybe inexpereince was a blessing, clearing bush and trees can't be that hard can it? You bet, we put in a lot of hard labour. Pulling out bush and chopping all the small trees down that we could. It was a project that took about 3 years to complete. Having a large property we were able to burn a lot of debris, leaving us with a mass of tree stumps. Finally we had to call the bulldozers in to remove and bury them.

Even once that was done it took another summer raking, picking out branches and getting the land ready for seeding. I remember sweating in hot, humid weather, picking out twigs and sticks, trying to follow the shade as much as possible.

Finally that September the ground was seeded and we let mother nature take over the watering. Slowly the lawn filled in and after another 2 summers we have a full green lawn.
